Peabody Police challenge North Shore Oldtimers for the Jimmy Fund
Peabody Police Jimmy Fund baseball game, Sept. 3
Peabody — The Peabody Police Department will step up to the plate to benefit the Jimmy Fund on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3. Members of the police department will challenge the North Shore Oldtimers, a team made up of former professional athletes. Played since 1956, the Peabody Police Jimmy Fund baseball game has become a local tradition to support cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. It is the second oldest continually running event for the Jimmy Fund.
The North Shore Oldtimers team always comes through with a winning line-up, including baseball players like John Tudor, Johnny Pesky, Oil Can Boyd, Bill Lee, Rowley Eastwick, Chris Howard, Bob Tewksbury, Richard Gale and Rico Petrocelli; former Bruins Ray Bourque, Rick Middleton, Reggie Lemelin, Brad Park, and Bob Sweeney; and former Celtic Rick Weitzman. This year’s roster has not been released yet.
There is no charge to attend the game, but donations for the Jimmy Fund will be accepted. Estimates are the Peabody Police, through the game and a variety of other fundraisers, have contributed nearly $300,000 to the Jimmy Fund. With the help of sponsors Outback Steakhouse, Pepsi and Carrabba’s Italian Grill, the event features plenty of food and activities.
The game gets under way at 10 a.m. at Emerson Park in Peabody. The Oldtimers will run a one-hour baseball clinic for children at 8:30 a.m. For more information about the event, visit www.jimmyfund.org or call Stephanie Lane at 978-538-6300 x1425.
