Joe Cronin Memorial Jimmy Fund Fishing Tournament, Aug. 10
OSTERVILLE - The 14th annual Joe Cronin Memorial Jimmy Fund Fishing Tournament is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 10, and the deadline to sign up is fast approaching. Those wishing to help reel in better treatments and more cures for cancer must register by July 13. Space is limited.
The daylong tournament takes place in the height of the area's fishing season. Supported by Mellon New England, it honors the life of Red Sox great and former American League president, Joe Cronin. Cronin, who was both a player and a manager for the Red Sox, was an active supporter of the Jimmy Fund since its establishment in 1948. He was a resident of Osterville until his death in 1984.
The fishing tournament will be held out of the Nauticus Marina, Oyster Harbors Marine and Crosby Boat Yard in Osterville, Mass. Participants will receive fishing gear, an on-board lunch, and a fully staffed boat to take them to premier fishing spots off of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Afternoon activities will be provided for children, and the event concludes with dinner, live and silent auctions, and an awards ceremony.
The entry fee is $750 per angler, with other participation levels available. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. and cast off is promptly at 8 a.m. Organizers hope this year's fundraising total puts them above the $2 million mark for cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
